Well, if you didn’t hear about this, it’s social media.
Social media is basically our modern version of the “Gimme Shelter” ad campaign. We see this ad all the time on the news, and every single time it is shown in one of those “HOT” commercials where the cool kids have their hands in their pockets and are looking at their phone screens.
People are starting to take it even more seriously, because it seems to have led to the death of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. People are being so paranoid about their privacy, they’re afraid to go on a Facebook, or to use Twitter because they’re afraid that their private information could be shared with their friends. We need to turn this around quick.
The death of social networking sites is due to what is called “Social Networking Privacy”. Basically, you’re just using someone’s information on your social network like you would a credit card or a bank account.
Social Networking Privacy is a big issue because it not only infringes on people’s rights to privacy, but also on the rights of companies like Facebook and Twitter to have their own terms of service. They could potentially get sued or get in trouble with the Federal Trade Commission, the largest US government agency which enforces consumer protection regulations on businesses.
In order to get rid of social media privacy issues, many governments are encouraging people to use anonymous networks which don’t have people’s real information on them. If you use your credit card on a site, you aren’t tracked by your bank, but you can’t control the information that it has.
It’s definitely too soon to go for these, but what if Facebook, the one and only social network out there, were to have their own privacy policy? That way you could decide to share your information with the world on any platform you wanted, and they wouldn’t know who you are. They would still know who you are, but you wouldnt have to worry about your own personal information being taken.
Facebook and other social networks need to become privacy-aware. They need to stop being the place that says, “I have nothing to hide,” and instead say, “I have permission to share information with everyone who has permission to see it.
Facebook’s privacy policy seems to be the most laughable and the most ridiculous of them all, because it seems to say that anything you do on the app is “private,” and when you post to Facebook, that is your whole life on Facebook. It’s like you are being asked to choose between sharing your life with the world and keeping your private life. It seems like that is the real reason why Facebook has this policy.
So we are told you can’t post anything to Facebook, but you can’t post anything to Facebook, either. So what? Does this mean that there is no privacy on Facebook? Of course not. You could post something to Facebook without revealing anything. But you might not mean to, so you might get in trouble for it.
